Now we have come to the end of the year, I look back on what we have done and realise there has been much happening at the Bradford Writers' Circle in 2008.

We held several competitions, which newcomers to our competitions won and we hosted a couple of events. One was for producing a calendar for 2009, which proved very popular. We ordedered 50 and they were scooped up almost instantly. We are shortly to plan our next one for 2010! Our Murder Mystery event was great fun and even included the guests at a coffee morning at Saltaire Methodist Church.

We gained three new members but sadly we lost two of our older members, Doreen Brook 78 and Stephen Walsh 82, both exceptional writers in their own field.

2009 is expected to be more productive, when we arrange speakers to our group and hold more interest workshops and competitions.

We are open to new ideas and you are welcome to join us and try us out!

SEPTEMBER NEWSLETTER 04

Dear friends,

Autumn has descended on us, as the swirling leaves relate their tale.
Time to be thinking of the months ahead when the light has failed and we are confined to our homes as the weather changes.
Whilst sitting round the fire, there is so much to think about.
How many times have we decided that this year we will write that novel, or send away those poems, or even start a journal?
But do we put our energies that way? No! We probably find everything else to do but complete our goal.

This month I thought we might have a brain purging session and let the rest of the group know what our intentions really are. How about each of us promising to enter that competition that always seems to have just passed its closing date?

We have a challenge set each time we meet, but I must admit that I, myself, do not always take this on.

How do you all feel about being given this task?
Would you like it to be set be someone different every time or are you happy with the way things are running.
It is very difficult when I do not get feed back. I sometimes wonder if you would prefer things run differently, but as someone assured me, if there were complaints, they would hopefully be aired.

TEA TIME

It has been a superb weight off my shoulders to have Stephen and Jean Walsh having taken over as ‘Refreshment Advisers’. Thanks for all the hard work they put into the job. As we open our doors at 6.45pm, there is time to get the kettle boiled up in time for our colleagues arriving. It has been suggested that we use the first quarter hour to have our tea break; anyone arriving late could possibly make their own. The meeting would then start at 7.15pm.

SCRABBLE EVENING

I must apologise to those who thought the Scrabble evening was the last Monday in the month. However, I am sure they enjoyed the change of having a small group with which to share their writings.

Thanks to Joan for arranging the playing. It was a bit different, I must admit, and getting the pattern of moving tables caused us a bit of a headache, but we gat there in the end. We shall have to have a Scrabble evening out of Circle time to allow those who are not too happy with it breathing space.

BCB RADIO

We are still looking for a volunteer LADY to be on the show in November. If you have not been on yet please ask about it.

BIRTHDAY BABES

The only birthday in October is that of Mary Tetlow, who is one of our adjudicators.

MEETING DATES

Martin and myself have filled in the required form for the CVS as to the dates for next year’s programme. Monday seemed to be very acceptable to everyone, so we have kept that day for our meetings. We chose the first, third and fifth month where possible, steering away from holiday times.

COMPETITIONS

The Children’s Story Competition was won by Nyomi Tordoff. Our best wishes go to her for her entry ‘Honey Fly’. Mary Shaw-Taylor was the adjudicator. Thanks Mary, I know you spent considerable effort to pick a winner.

TYKE WRITER

We were again mentioned in the Tyke Writer by Mark Cantrell. He listed some pointers which were given in the past as guidelines to entering competitions.
Any news of writing groups and writers in the district, please let me know and I will pass on the information,.

WEB WISE

If you have looked at it please let me have your comments on the web site we have produced.

EXHIBITION TIME

Martin is deep in planning an exhibition in Leeds in January. He is keeping one area for the Circle to be advertised and we can use it to display our work. Please give this some thought He will need volunteers to offer time to man some of the exhibits. Please let him know if you can help in any way. He needs organisers, setters up, some equipment and help on the days it is running.

Dear Friends and Fellow Writers

In the 60 years history of the Bradford Writer' Circle, we have never been a group that shied away from new technology. How many of our members now have word processors, or their own PC computers and can read this new 'Blog' site?

This site means every time there's news to share it can be posted here and you get to read it first. There will still be a monthly hard copy of the news letter as always, so no worries there then.
